What You Should Know About Vaccine Booster Shots

Written by Mercedes Scientific | Nov 26, 2024 8:39:05 PM

Vaccines help your body build immunity against dangerous viruses and bacteria. Booster shots are valuable tools for disease control and work toward increasing your immunity to viruses targeted by specific vaccines.

With the release of COVID-19 booster shots for those who received mRNA vaccines, preparing to meet the incoming demand is essential to protecting people's health. Learn everything you need to know about booster shots here.

What Is a Booster Shot?

Some vaccines require extra support to ensure strong immunity against the virus or bacteria they help your body fight.

Some vaccines could lose potency over time, and some viruses change and mutate, rendering vaccines less effective.

In either of these scenarios, booster shots can help your body by reigniting its immunity to the virus. A booster shot is an extra shot after an initial vaccination that reinforces your immunity to a specific bacterium or virus. You may need a booster shot weeks, months or years after the initial vaccine.

How Do Vaccine Booster Shots Work?

Vaccines contain a weakened form of the targeted virus or bacteria and teach your body to recognize it and defend itself.

The shot triggers your immune system to fight the foreign organism in the vaccine as it would if you were actually infected.

This process trains your body to remember how to defend itself against the specific germ. If you were exposed to it again, your body should be able to recognize it and kill it before it causes harm.

Booster shots help your body identify the targeted bacteria or virus and attack it so you can stay healthy even after exposure.

Who Is Eligible for a COVID-19 Booster Shot and Where Can You Get One?

The first round of COVID-19 booster shots was scheduled to be released on Sept. 20, 2021. Fully vaccinated Americans who are 18 and above who received both doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be able to receive a booster eight months after their last dose of the initial vaccine. The booster shot will be available in major pharmacies across the United States, and it will be free regardless of your insurance status.
